Tee Time By Jim Anderson

Maybe I'm all alone on this and will be accused of being a male chauvinist, but is anybody else tired of Michelle Wie trying to make a cut on the PGA tour? Annika Sorenstam tried and failed at the Colonial a couple of years ago but had the wisdom and humility to say once was enough. The men are bigger and stronger and the courses are set up to challenge them. What will Michelle Wie prove if she does make a cut in her 6th, 12th, or 39th attempt? We already know that she is a precociously, unbelievably talented 16 year old woman golfer, but she's not in the same league as the best male players in the world and never will be. She probably will make a cut if she continues to try, but the novelty has worn off and the cynic in me believes it's probably more about appearance fees than anything else.
It's great to see Canadian Jim Nelford on the ESPN telecast feeds. His thoughtful, insightful and grammatical observations are such a pleasant change from the Bobbys, Billys, Billy Raes, etc. I nearly scream every time Bill Kratzert tells me Tiger “hoisted it waaay up in the air.” What does he expect? Ground balls?
And while I'm complaining about golf announcers, why did “getting it up and down” become “getting it up and in.” Up and down has syntactic balance. Every golfer with an IQ over 80 knows what it means. Do any golfers you play with ever say to you “nice up and in”? If they do, banish them to Newlands or somewhere. Whew – now I feel better.
Ledgeviews:
Kudos to Nick Taylor, Lucas Bogdan, Ian Mulder, and Brett Webster on their fine showings at the BC Amateur. Also to the Ryder/Solheim Cup participants who did not expire of heat prostration over the last week-end. The Gaudet/Smith teams proved to be superior to the highly rated MacDuff assemblages.
On another note:
The Abbotsford Curling Club's annual barbeque and golf tournament takes place August 27 at Kinkora. Register at 859-9244 and bring a few new curlers in for the upcoming season.
