If the online leaderboards are any indication, the professional golf world is
still just learning who Nick Taylor is.
For the first couple days of the PGA Tour’s RBC Canadian Open last week, the
20-year-old Abbotsford native was listed as an Englishman on PGATour.com. On
ESPN.com, he had an American flag beside his name.
No matter, though – if Taylor continues his recent career trajectory, they’ll
all know who he is soon enough. The University of Washington junior-to-be made
the cut and was the low amateur medalist at the Canadian Open, his second pro
event of the summer. Taylor, who had previously qualified for the U.S. Open in
June, earned a spot in the Canadian Open field by virtue of his victory at the
Canadian Amateur last year.
“It was a lot of fun,” said Taylor, who shot 70-70-72-71 to finish at one under
par, tied for 53rd, at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont. “It was the first
time I’ve played in a PGA Tour event in Canada in front of a hometown crowd.
People were great all week. With the weather off and on, it was pretty cool for
them to come out, support me and watch me play.”
American rookie Chez Reavie won the Canadian Open, finishing at 17-under, while
Canadian favourite Mike Weir finished tied for fifth at 12-under.
