Golf is generally an individual sport, but the alternate-shot format introduces a bit of teamwork into the equation.
For Kirby and Rachel Carter, that concept of teamwork was on full display – more or less – on the ninth hole of Saturday’s opening round at the Ledgeview Mixed Invitational. Faced with a tough bunker shot, Rachel Carter came through with a spectacular swing to put the ball just two inches away from the cup.
“I made the putt,” Kirby joked, feigning eagerness to claim more than his share of the credit. “She hits it to two inches from 30 yards out, but I finished it off.”
The husband-wife team from Coquitlam were the big winners at the annual mixed event, combining for a 69 on Saturday and carding a 73 during Sunday’s best-ball round to take the overall low gross title. The Carters finished five strokes ahead of the McGowan/Pultz duo (147 total) and seven strokes ahead of Ledgeview’s Jerry and Trudi Wallace.
On the net side, Raymond and Carol Hart combined to shot 120 to claim top honours. They finished ahead of fellow Ledgeviewers Mike and Deby Wnuk (121) and the Marshall/Fahr tandem (122).
In the aftermath of the victory, Raymond Hart admitted that his wife had to twist his arm a bit to even get him to enter. Most years, he spends Labour Day weekend on the course with his buddies, but Carol convinced him to ditch a pair of weekend tee times in order to participate in the mixed event.
“The guys are going to be giving me a hard time about this, but it was a lot of fun,” he said with a chuckle.
