Ledgeview Juniors Lead Yale Lions
to High School Golf Team Victory
The Yale Lions high school golf team had a great week, winning the Abbotsford-Mission championship on Monday, and then topping that on Tuesday by taking the Eastern Conference Championship at the Chilliwack Golf and Country Club.

Two Ledgeview golfers turned in incredible individual performances at the latter event, as Yale’s Nick Taylor and Robert Bateman’s Lucas Bogdan (pictured to the right) both shot 65 at the par 71 course.That tied Taylor’s career low score. He had shot a 65 at Boundary Shores near White Rock recently, and that score set a new club record.

Taylor is a national team golfer who will represent Canada at the World Junior Championships in Japan in June, and in September will begin playing out his golf scholarship at the University of Washington in Seattle, alongside fellow golf phenom James Lepp.

"It’s fantastic to have a captain like Nick Taylor", said Yale coach Tom Hall.

Taylor is the quiet leader of an immensely talented Yale team that finished with a score of 289, which was 11 points ahead of second-place Thomas Haney of Maple Ridge. Yale’s Brent Webster shot 74, while Brett Stewart and Ian Mulder each scored 75. Cody Kwak is the fifth Yalian team member, and his 82 on the day did not count.

The Lions are the reigning provincial high school golf champions, and also won the title in 2003. With all of them now in Grade 12 except Mulder, this group is heavily favoured to win the school’s third B.C. title. And they’re on their way. The top three teams from Chilliwack’s tournament now move on to the Fraser Valley championship, to be held at Boundary Bay in Delta on May 26.
The third-place team in the conference was Sardis at 305, and behind them in fourth place, with 313 points, were Bogdan’s Robert Bateman Timberwolves.

Hall said he would have loved to see the T-Wolves get into the Valleys. “It’s unfortunate they didn’t qualify. Lucas is a great golfer, and he had a great round,” said Hall.
