Lepp Wins NCAA Golf Title

June 4, 2005

Owings Mills, MD -- Washington junior James Lepp turned in the performance of a lifetime to come from six strokes back to win the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. Lepp shot 7-under 63 during the final round and then beat Pepperdine's Michael Putnam (Tacoma) in a three-hole playoff to become UW's first national champion in the sport. The Huskies finished the championship third, the best performance in team history. Georgia won the national title while Georgia Tech was second.

Lepp completed the 72-hole event at 4-under 276. He had rounds of 70, 67, 76 and 63 on the Caves Valley Golf Club course in Owings Mills, Md. Putnam shot 69 during Saturday's final round.

After both players recorded par on the first and second playoff holes, Putnam three-putted on the third extra hole while Lepp managed par.

Washington's finish marked the second year in a row the Huskies placed in the top-10 at the NCAA's. Last year's squad was sixth.

The Huskies shot 4-under 276 during the final round to complete the tournament at 33-over 1153. Georgia won by 11 strokes at 1135 while Georgia Tech finished at 1146.

Following the tournament Lepp was named a first-team All-American and received the Arnold Palmer Award as the collegiate champion.
